Hive is probably the most well known smart thermostat on the market, simple to use, intuitive and overall a well made product. Owned by British Gas and developed by the AlertMe team, the Hive Active Heating Thermostat and HiveHome range is constantly growing and Hive is a great choice for those looking for something smart and simple. A very popular thermostat and if you are unsure of it's slightly clunky appearance, you can always customise your unit with different edge plates to change it's colour to suit your home.
It has the ability to control both your heating and hot water and can be installed on the wall or on a stand.
Hive Active Heating comes in two main versions, with a 3rd offering not actually being Hive Active Heating:
This is the Hive Active Heating system without Internet access, so no smart capabilities are offered. This isn't a product line I really get involved with, but if you have the stand-alone version, I am happy to convert it to Hive Active Heating and make it "go-live" if needed.
Single Channel Variant
If you are looking to control a combination boiler or just your heating circuit, then this is the version for you. The Hive thermostat will have it's receiver mounted next to your boiler or existing wiring center with the Hive thermostat free to be placed on the stand or on a wall which is then powered up by 4 AA batteries. The hub is then connected to your Internet and then the system paired together to get it all to talk.
Typical installation duration: Around 1hr.
Dual Channel Variant
For those with hot water cylinders and want to control both their heating and their hot water from their phone, this is the version for you. The Hive thermostat will have it's receiver mounted next to your boiler or existing wiring center, normally where your old clock/programmer used to be connected with the Hive thermostat free to be placed on the stand or on a wall which is then powered up by 4 AA batteries. The hub is then connected to your Internet and then the system paired together to get it all to talk nicely.
Typical installation duration: 1-2hrs.
NB: Hive 1
Due to the relationship that HiveHome have with British Gas, I am unable to offer installation support for the 1st generation of Hive units. I can offer wiring assistance, however setup and configuration is resricted on this earlier model, so reconfiguration is not always possible.

All specifications were correct at time of writing, due to the nature of smart controls, features get added frequently (and unfortunately, sometimes removed), please check with the manufacturer or directly with myself if you specifically require a certain feature. I try to keep these feature lists updated as regularily as I can and if you notice an error, please let me know.
Yes. Compatible with all UK combi boilers.
Normal gas boilers with hot water tank
Yes. Traditional S and Y plan systems are easily converted unless you have a specialist controls pack like the "Honeywell SmartFit" system. Additionally gravity systems can also be controlled through the software and as such there is no major re-wiring to get gravity systems to function correctly.
Oil boilers with or without hot water tank
Yes. Depending on the oil boiler in question, I personally advise a seperate switching relay as the unit only has a 3amp switching circuit and some oil boilers can pull a 5amp current which could damage the nest in some situations. See also the above note on gas systems with tank regarding system design.
Not officially supported for the UK market, however the unit will work fine in most cases.
Heat interface units & district systems
Yes. As long as you have independant control of your heating system, then Hive should be compatible.
Technically, it's not officially supported for the UK market, however, like most things in this world it does depend on your system as Hive is compatible with electric boilers and doesn't normally require any special components, but for panel or underfloor mat systems some modifications may be required and you should call me to discuss the type of system you have. Unfortunately, if you have electric storage heaters, there is not a compatible smart stat on the market.
An "always-on" broadband connection will be required with spare ethernet port near your router and spare 240v plug socket within close proximity.
